Lost history of the Eternals:
Surviving colonists from the original starship which came to this system from Earth.
Upon arrival, something went wrong and the ship had to be abandoned.
As the escape pods passed through the ring system, they became ageless, and were imbued with magical-type abilities.
None of their offspring maintained the near immortality, and only some retained the magic, which would inconsistently show up or not in each passing generation, sometimes several generations with or without, and then a sudden switch.
They setup communities, and eventually cities and countries, that eventually went to war.
However, they all froze during the Ice Age, and have lost their memories of prior events.
