The prince left home on a mission of learning, which was ultimately not taught. He sought a teacher, but did not find the one he was looking for, and does not learn what he needed to learn when he needed to learn it.
He was taught the old languages of the world, but hides it, mostly. While investigating the Academy, he has to use this knowledge.
