In the year AGK127, a sea-faring Avgar, hearing tales of those who dwelt in the sea, and fleeing the coming Thairral Split, learned to give himself permanent gills so he could breathe underwater. He found a wife and gave her the same gills, and their children were born with gills, as were theirs, and so on, and a new subrace was created.
