For the first thousand years of the prison's existence, it was built by the inmates. Upon arrival on the island a prisoner was instructed to begin digging and cutting rocks out of the ground and build their cell. For the first thousand years of the prison's existence, it was built by the inmates. Upon arrival on the island a prisoner was instructed to begin digging and cutting rocks out of the ground and build their cell. Eventually, the digging became tunnels in levels, and the building grew into towers.
